Small Scenic Box

This is a small box made in England - probably in the South Staffordshire region - in the late 18th century. Probably in the Bilston area or possibly Birmingham or even London but definitely English from the 1700s. They are famous for their Battersea enamel boxes, etc. Not sure if this would be considered a patch box or tabatiere / snuff / pill box but either way it is a fun piece! Smaller than many one sees. The box is hand painted with a nice scene to the top of a gentleman next to a semi nude lady in a landscape surrounding. The sides have floral arrangements to the front and back, a small flower to one side and a bug to the other. The underside has another bug as well as some single leaves. Nice quality painting! The metal mounts are probably brass or gilded copper. They close nicely! The box displays nicely but has some of the usual cracks to the enamel and probably had some missing pieces of enamel as well though it is hard to tell as it has been restored. The top and underside for sure as they ahve yellowed from age. There is evidence of over painting to the sides though I think that was mostly done to match the to and bottom. The inside has been over painted as well though you still see the cracks and again some was probably done jsut to amtch the rest of the piece. All in all it displays very well and the yellowing kind of blends in and looks nice. All in all a great example! The box is 1.125 inches tall, 2.125 inches wide and 1.5 inches deep.
