Closter Veilsdorf Cup & Saucer

This is a rare Closter-Veilsdorf cup and saucer with classical decoration, circa 1775. The Closter-Veilsdorf factory was established in Thuringia in 1760 and produced pieces in a variety of styles. This classically inspired decoration features cameo-style portrait heads of Roman nobles and swags of flowers, and was popular around 1775. See Scherf, Thuringer Porzellan (1980), plate 27, for a dish with similar decoration. All pieces from this factory are exceptionally rare. Unfortunately the handle on the cup has been broken and reattached, with the loss of a small chip. This piece belongs to a good friend of mine. Please e-mail me for more information or photos.

Price is $1299
