Nice Scenic Pipe

This is a nice pipe bowl made in Germany in the 19th century. Probably early on. It is hand painted with a superb scene to the front of an elderly gentleman wearing a long red robe standing in a nice landscape surrounding. He is holding a staff that has a snake winding up it. The scene is title Aesculap in black script underneath. Aesculap / Aesculapius refers to the ancient mythology Greek and Roman god of medicine and healing. The scene shows an early version of the medical symbol of the serpent-entwined staff aka the Rod of Asclepius . A really neat piece and not a scene I have come across before. The scene is of a very good quality! Sadly the pipe is not marked as to a specific maker. The pipe including the lid is 5 inches long and has a top diameter of 1.25 inches. The lid still closes tightly. The piece is in great condition with some minor use marks. It was smoked and still has residue on the inside! The lid shows signs of oxidation. A really ncie example and if you collect pieces related to medicine this would be a rare addition! Please email me for more information or photos.

Price is $399
