Gotha Damenstrand Scene Plate

This is a nice scenic plate made most likely by Gotha around in the mid 19th century. Definitely from the Thuringia area of Germany and the quality as well as the underside - especially that central ring support as well as the paste and painting style are typical of Gotha as is the labelling of the scene. Gotha is probably the best of the Thuringia makers in terms of quality of the paste and painting. This plate is hand painted with a nice quality large scene in the center of the ladies beach ( Damenstrand ) at Norderney which is one of the East Frisian Islands off the North Sea coast of Germany. I guess it used to be a beach for jsut ladies in the mid to later 19th century! The scene includes a couple of beach chairs, some building presumably for changing and a few tiny figures but my favorite part are the ships including the steamer and the dunes partly visible in the front. The scene is surrounded by a thick gold ring and a thin one next to that, another thin gold band along the edge of the well and a nice gold trim along the rim on relief designs to the paste. The plate is in great condition with a small black firing flaw as shown along the rim to the front and another on the back and a tiny bit of wear to the gilding but all in all as nice as they come and a rare scene to it as well. It is not marked underneath but I am quite certain it was made by Gotha. The title of the scene in black on the back read Der Damen-strand auf Norderney The plate is 9.25 inches in diameter and 1.125 inches tall. Please email me for more information or photos.
