Gotha Floral Cup & Saucer

This is a nice cup and saucer made by Gotha in the 18th century. Gotha is probably the best of the Thuringia makers in terms of quality of the paste and painting. They existed from 1757 until 1937 in one form or another. This cup and saucer is hand painted with a nice floral design. The cup has a larger flower to one side as well as three small flowers while the saucer has a large floral arrangement in the center and three single flowers along the rim. Both have a neat puce trim along the edge. The cup has the typical handle for this maker with the fake screw allatchments at the terminals. This type of handle is a personal favorite of mine. Floral cups are quite hard to find by this maker as many more seem to be decorated with sepia scenes. The set is in grea condition with a minor touch of wear but they display perfectly! Both pieces are marked underneath with the under glaze blue R. g. mark as well as another blue mark near the edge and an impressed or incised letter. The cup is just under 2.25 inches tall and 2.5 inches in diameter. The saucer is 1 inch tall and 4.875 inches in diameter. A great example of their work!
