1740 Puce Battle Scene Cup & Saucer

This is an early cup and saucer made by Meissen in about 1740. Both the cup and saucer have a puce hand painted battle scenes to them. The saucer has two soldiers with swords riding their horses right over a fallen soldier in a lndscape surrounding including clouds. The cup has a scene of foot soldiers as well as cavalry in a landscape surrounding near a town. Each scene is surrounded by an intricate gold and puce trim and the rims of the two have a superb fancy gold trim. The saucer also has three small single puce flowers on it and the cup has two flowers on the outside as well as a large and a small flower to the bottom inside. The simple handle is fully gilded. The flowers are still painted in the woodcut style which dates the set around 1740 because of the impressed numbers an both pieces. Amazingly the set is in superb condition with no wear to the gilding to speak off! A couple of minor manufacturing flaws normal on these early pieces. The saucer is about 0.875 inches tall and 4.875 inches in diameter. The cup is 1.75 inch tall and 3 inches in diameter. Both pieces are marked with the under glaze blue crossed swords mark from this period as well as a gold 78 and the already mentioned impressed number.
