Male Figural Pastille Burner

This is a fun piece - a figural pastille or incense burner made by Niderviller around 1800. The figure is of a gentleman - reminds me a bit of a sailor - with his bag behind him. The figure is dressed nicely and standing on the typical rock work base with the gold trim around the edge. Quite typical for this maker. The incense part can be seen from the back where there is an opening in his bag with a little pin on the bottom to stick the pastille. There is a hole inside to the right that goes up into the figurine and out of his mouth. These types of burners were used around this time since house and places often smelled quite badly and the incense was used to cover it up a bit. It is rare to find a figural one and I have never seen one by this maker. Really quite nice and I have his matching lady as well. The piece is in great condition with the right hand having some damage and a couple of chips around the base as shown and some firing cracks inside the bag or they might be result of use but they do not go through the outside. It displays well and is just a fun piece to have around. As is the case with most of their figurines the piece is unmarked except for a red letter B inside the bag as shown. The figure is 5.75 inches tall and the base has a diameter of 3.5 inches. Please email me for more information or other pictures.
