Figural Pastille / Incense Burner #3

This is a really fun figural pastille or incense burner made by Niderviller around 1800. The figure is of a gentleman having his relaxing afternoon smoke while sitting on a stool and leaning on a barrel which has an opening for the incense to go into and the smoke would come out of the pipe bowl on top. A cup sits on the barrel filled with a drink from the pitcher sitting on the ground. The pitcher is hand painted with a scene typical of Paris porcelain of this period which is awesome. Nice base quite typical of this maker. Not sure about the white cap on top of the gentleman's head - maybe he got hurt? These types of incense burners were used around this time since houses and places often smelled quite badly and the incense was used to cover it up a bit. It is rare to find a figural one and I had never seen one by this maker until I bought a pair a while ago and now this one here. Really quite nice! The piece is in great condition with the pipe going from the bowl to his mouth having been pefectly repaired and the jug has a tiny chip to the side top edge repaired as well. The piece displays perfectly and is just a fun to have around. Will try it out one of these days, too. As is the case with most of their figurines the piece is unmarked except for a red number 1. inside the barrel as shown. The figurine is 6 inches tall, 4.625 inches wide and 3.75 inches deep.
