Lizard Handle Cup & Saucer

This is a very neat cup and saucer made by one of the Paris makers around 1800. Likely Jacob Petit or one of the better makers. I have never seen a set like it so it is definitely something unusual. The unglazed saucer top is decorated with a floral design in relief that was painted in polychrome. The ground color of the rest except the well is a pale yellow. Nice gold trim as well. The saucer underside is glazed like any other set. The cup outside is also unglazed and decorated in the same way except it also has Asian type houses on it, a superb foot and the handle is the main reason I bought this set - it is in the shape of a lizard! Truly something unique! The inside cup is glazed and fully gilded. The cup and saucer are in great condition but the saucer has three hairlines that are virtually invisible from the top due to it not being glazed. The cup has a single hairline and the inside gilding is worn. The saucer has some flaking to the gold as it was applied to the unglazed porcelain and doesn't hold as well. The saucer looks like it has lots of black spots on top but I suspect it is just dirt in all the small pores of the unglazed surface and will give it a cleaning when I have time. I was curious and gave the saucer a quick once over cleaning and it improved a lot! So that is all it was. With a little more patience it will probably come perfectly clean! The set is unmarked which is common for Paris makers around that time but definitely by one of the top makers! The cup is 2.375 inches tall and 3.75 inches in diameter. The saucer is 1 inches tall and 5.25 inches in diameter. Please email me for more information or other pictures.
