Tortoise Shell Ground Cup & Saucer #2

This is a rare cup and saucer made by Sevres in the early 19th century - 1811 to be exact. The set is decorated with the rare tortoise / turtle ground color known as écaille de tortue or fond écaille which is a mottled brown ground color on which they painted a superb gold trim of palm leaves and grapes on a vine. The combination looks stunning and it is very hard to find! The set is made of hard paste porcelain not their earlier soft paste. The cup is marked underneath with the red script Sevres mark with an 11 under it for 1811 as well as their usual incised marks as shown. The saucer is marked with a partial Sevres mark but most of it is gone and it also has their usual incised marks. The cup and saucer are in superb condition with just a touch of wear to the gilding and a firing spot to the inside of the cup. The cup is 2.5 inches tall and 2.5 inches in diameter. The saucer is 1.125 inches tall and 5.125 inches in diameter. Please email me for more information or other pictures.

Price is $1999
