Bacchus Mug w/Frog

This is a superb figural mug made of some sort of Creamware like pottery in the Staffordshire region around the very early 19th century. These pieces are not super rare - there is a whole range of cups/mugs with frogs inside from this period but this one here is the nicest version I think. It is superbly modeled with an attached pedestal and is in the shape of the head of the god bacchus. He has a beard and a grapevine wreath around the top of his head. The piece has lots of molded details to it and is hand painted perfectly. Nice yellow and blue trim to the top, bottom and handle. My favorite part however is the surprise frog modeled on the inside as shown. No idea why this was done but it certainly is fun! The piece is in perfect condition which is always a bonus on these early pieces. It is unmarked underneath except for maybe an A or a ^ as shown but that's normal. The cup is 4.75 inches tall, 3.625 inches from nose to handle and about 2.625 inches wide. A bit out of round at the top as shown. Please email me for more information or other pictures.

Price is $249
