UPW Condiment Dish

This is a rare condiment dish made by the Union Porcelain Works in the later 19th century. Union Porcelain Works was one of the most important and inventive American porcelain manufacturers in the second-half of the nineteenth century. In addition to their imaginative works designed by the German-born artistic director, Karl H. L. Müller , the firm’s mainstay was the production of heavy porcelain hotel dinnerware. The extensive service this dish came from was made by Thomas Carl Smith, head of the Union Porcelain Works. There are pieces of this shape in the MET museum but I could not find any with this superb decoration. Much nicer than the more plain ones I could find. Based on Asian designs. It is nicely shaped and corner has a yellow lines design to it with those colorful hand painted designs in between as well as in the center. Just a fun dish and not a shape I have seen for sale before so it was a must have for me! A highly collectible piece and really quite nice. American porcelain after all is much less common than its European counterparts. The dish is in perfect condition with a touch of wear. It is about 1.125 inches tall at the handle, 4.875 inches long and 3.875 inches wide. Marked as shown on the underside with thegreen U.P.W. eagle mark as well as the yellow Union Porcelain Works Green point NY mark. Please email me for more information or other pictures.

Price is $399
